Improve the garden floor without chemical fertilizers or compost? This works out! All you need is clover seeds and this green manure guide.Flower bed with clover
Most garden soils are by nature not ideal for successfully growing fruits and vegetables on them. Of course, most plants grow on almost any surface, but if this is optimally supplied with nutrients, you can increase the yield considerably. And it is precisely these nutrients that you should feed the soil with fertilizers. Stay away from chemical fertilizers! Rather choose green manure with clover!
Advantages of green manuring
There is fertilizer in the trade for a wide variety of plants. But especially when it comes to fruit and vegetable growing, you should prefer natural fertilizers. Above all, green manure, because it can do much more than normal fertilizer. The plants form e.g. roots in the soil, so that it is deeply loosened. In addition, the planting forms a dense cover after a certain time and can thus counteract silting up of the earth. The plant cover also suppresses weed growth.
But that's not all. After mowing the area, you can even leave the plants on the ground, because this creates a good layer of mulch. The soil is better aerated, which also activates soil life and increases the amount of humus. Thanks to the loosening and improved ventilation, the floor is also able to store more water. Use clover for green manure
The clover is one of the fast growing plants that you can use for green manuring. In addition to lupins, it is particularly suitable for planting medium to loamy substrates. The roots can reach up to two meters deep, which causes a deep loosening of the soil.
In addition, the clover lives in a community with various soil bacteria that attach themselves to the roots of the plant and inject nitrogen from the air. As a result, the amount of nitrogen in the earth increases, which cannot be washed out so quickly by the rain.
Instructions for green manure with clover
➤ Step 1:
There are different varieties of clover, some of which are even hardy. However, it usually doesn't matter whether you choose a hardy or a non-hardy variety. Green manure can be carried out equally well with both. So first of all buy a suitable product.
➤ Step 2:
As soon as you have harvested the beds in autumn at the latest, the foundation can take place. To do this, you first have to prepare the beds as if you want to sow lawn. Only the leveling is eliminated. (Reading tip: create a new lawn in 6 steps)
➤ Step 3:
If you have decided on a hardy clover, you can simply leave it over winter. It then freezes before the seeds ripen. You should only mow the remains in spring and work them flat into the ground.
If you have chosen a clover that is not hardy, you must mow the plants before the seeds ripen. Then leave the crop as a layer of mulch on the ground, where it rots. You can then simply work the remains into the ground in spring.
➤ Step 4:
You can replant your beds about three to four weeks after the clover has been worked into the soil (i.e. in spring).
