Whether for garden design, as a remedy for weeds or for soil protection: bark mulch is simply a must in any garden. We explain how to apply it correctly.Bark mulch has many advantages
Bark mulch is made from shredded tree bark. And this is exactly what offers many advantages. As soon as you have spread out the bark mulch in the flower bed as the top layer of earth, it already regulates its soil temperature. In summer, the bark mulch in the soil underneath also keeps the soil moisture much better, even when the heat is high. And even in winter, the mulch does a lot, because then it protects the soil from drying out and frost.
At the same time, bark mulch minimizes weed growth, which in turn makes work much easier. It is also proven that microorganisms like to settle in the bark mulch. This has the advantage that the soil structure improves and soil fertility increases. In summary, bark mulch offers these advantages:
- Weed growth is minimized
- Soil quality is improved
- Soil moisture lasts longer
- Soil protection through temperature regulation,
- neat bed view / possibilities for garden design
How to properly spread bark mulch
First of all: No matter where you apply the bark mulch or how you use the mulch: Before spreading, you should always clear all beds and paths from weeds.
Spread bark mulch in the flower bed or under bushes / hedges / trees:
In principle, you should not apply the bark mulch in flower beds and under bushes, hedges or trees higher than in a layer of 5 centimeters. By using a rake or a small hand rake, you can easily distribute the mulch.
Spreading bark mulch is less suitable if you have planted your garden beds with ground cover and if they are bedding plants that have a particularly high lime requirement.
It is also important that you fertilize from time to time under the bark mulch. This often removes valuable nitrogen from the soil. Therefore, it is best to supply the soil with nitrogen fertilizer before spreading the bark mulch.
Create a garden path from bark mulch:
The situation is different if you want to use the bark mulch to form a particularly soft, natural-looking garden path. Then you have to apply a layer of at least 10 centimeters. In addition, it is best to lay out garden fleece on the garden path beforehand.
